A heat pump, such as the York Affinity series combined with a York Affinity furnace can be up to 60% more energy efficient than systems installed 10 or more years. Even when the outside temperature is comparatively cold, the heat pump is capable of extracting heat from the exterior air to compliment the heat provided by the furnace.

Cooling efficiency of air conditioning units is measured in SEER's (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) the higher the number, the more efficient the unit. The popular York affinity model featured here has a SEER value of 18, significantly higher than units it is replacing which according to Natural resources Canada may have a SEER of 7 or 8. The Heating Refrigerating and Air Conditioning institute of Canada has raised the bar on air condtioning efficiency and the current minimum standard is a SEER of 13, hence the larger air conditioning units you see installed at your neighbours house.

Heat pumps may cost a little more than an air conditioning units, but with Hydro costs forecast to rise and compressor warranties of 10 years, the payback  to you is significant.
