Last January, a homeowner in Kemptville called us about her furnace and said, “My furnace is running all day, but my house is still cold.” Her energy bill was climbing. Her house was still 14°C. She’d already Googled everything she could think of and was convinced the whole system needed replacing. It didn’t. Forty minutes after the RB Heating Climatecare expert arrived, the furnace filter was checked before it ever caused that again. If your furnace is running but your house stays cold, here’s what’s actually going on.

Check Your Thermostat First

It sounds too simple, but we get this call weekly. If your fan is set to “ON” instead of “AUTO,” it runs nonstop. Then the furnace is blowing cold air through your vents even when the furnace isn’t firing. Your furnace is on, but no heat in the rooms, and you assume the worst. Switch it to “Auto,” give it 20 minutes, and see what happens. If you’re still wrestling with an outdated thermostat, an Ecobee Smart Thermostat takes that guesswork completely off the table.

When Did You Last Change the Filter?

A dirty furnace filter is the most common reason a furnace runs hard but heats nothing. When airflow gets choked off, the heat exchanger overheats and triggers a safety shutoff. Then the blower keeps spinning, but no warm air is actually being produced. You feel air at the vents. It’s just cold.

In Kemptville, with our long heating season, a 1-inch filter should be swapped out every 4–6 weeks from November through March. Our WeCare maintenance plan covers this before it ever becomes an issue.

Some Rooms Cold, Others Fine? That’s a Duct Problem

If you feel uneven heating in the house or think the furnace isn’t heating properly, then you should correct this misconception. Your furnace is doing its job; the heat just isn’t arriving where it should. Closed vents, blocked return grilles, or leaky ductwork are usually to blame. Gaps in ductwork alone can waste 20–40% of your heat into an attic or crawl space you’re not even trying to heat. A home ventilation system assessment finds exactly where you’re losing it.

Short Cycling: Your Furnace Is Working Against Itself

Notice the furnace turning on, running for a minute, shutting off, then starting again? That is called short cycling, and it’s a warning sign.\\\\ An oversized unit, a bad flame sensor, or (again) a clogged filter can all cause it. The furnace never completes a full heat cycle, so the temperature barely budges. Left unchecked, it also wears out components fast. If this sounds like your system, it’s time to book a furnace repair in Kemptville, Ontario, before a cheap fix turns into an expensive one.

Your Furnace Might Just Be Done

Furnaces are built to last 15–20 years. But a 16-year-old unit running through a –25°C Kemptville winter is working far harder than it was designed to. Efficiency drops, heating cycles get longer, and at some point, the math stops making sense. Modern systems run at 95–98% AFUE; older ones often sit at 60–70%. That’s a massive gap you’re paying for every month. If yours is getting up there in age, take a look at our furnace installation options and our current rebates.
