Your air conditioner was running fine yesterday. Today, your house feels like a sauna because the AC is not cooling or blowing warm air. You’ve already checked the thermostat, flipped the breaker, and swapped out the filter, but it’s still not working right.
Every summer, I get the same calls. Homeowners struggle with AC problems and get frustrated; it’s 30°C outside, and their AC is acting up. So our experts at Rbheating climateCare figured out real fixes to the most common AC problems.
Here we go.
My AC is running, but not cooling
This is the #1 AC problem I deal with. Nine times out of ten? It’s a dirty air filter. When that filter is clogged, your system is basically trying to breathe through a pillow. Swap it out first. If that doesn’t fix it, you might have low refrigerant, which means there’s a leak somewhere. That’s a job for a technician. Running your AC with low refrigerant can destroy the AC compressor, and that’s an expensive repair you don’t want.
My AC just stopped turning on completely
Before you panic, check your circuit breaker. A tripped breaker is the most common reason for turning your AC off. Reset it once. If it trips again, stop. That’s your system telling you something’s wrong electrically, and you’ll need a pro to look at it safely.
There’s water dripping inside my house near the AC unit
Your AC removes humidity from the air, and that moisture drains through a condensate line. When that line gets clogged with algae or debris, water backs up and leaks. You can pour a cup of white vinegar down the drain line every few months to keep it clear. Simple, cheap, and it works.
My AC makes a weird noise
One of my clients was frustrated about strange AC sounds. Grinding usually means the motor bearings are worn. Squealing often points to a belt or fan issue. These don’t fix themselves and get worse. The longer you wait, the more it costs.
My AC keeps turning on and off every few minutes
That’s called short cycling, and it’s hard on your system. It can mean your unit is oversized for your home, the refrigerant is low, or the thermostat is faulty. Any of these needs a proper diagnosis.
Most AC problems give you warning signs before they become big, expensive failures. Unusual sounds, warm air, water where it shouldn’t be. Pay attention to this HVAC maintenance checklist, and you’ll save yourself a lot of money and a lot of sweaty nights.
