1. What HVAC Rebates Are Available in Ontario for 2023?

In Ontario, there are several rebate programs available for HVAC improvements, including the Canada Greener Homes Grant and the Enbridge Home Efficiency Rebate Plus (HER+) program. Homeowners must apply through HER+ to be considered for both the provincial grant program and the federal grant initiative.

2. What is the Maximum Amount I Can Receive From These HVAC Rebates?

As of May 2023, Enbridge Gas has partnered with the Government of Canada to co-offer the HER+ program with the Greener Homes Grant. This harmonization allows homeowners to access a maximum combined rebate of $10,000 (plus $600 for home energy audit reimbursements).

3. What HVAC Retrofits Are Eligible for Rebates?

  1. Space and Water Heaters: By opting for ground source, air source, or domestic hot water heat pumps that are ENERGY STAR® certified, homeowners can reduce their energy consumption by up to 70 percent. For those living in colder climates, other energy-efficient appliances may also be eligible.
  2. Oil to Heat Pump: The Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program is offered to select households as part of the Greener Homes Grant. Switching from oil to an electric air source heat pump can lead to significant savings on heating bills and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
  3. Smart Thermostats: Smart, or programmable thermostats, can help you save money on energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint by scheduling optimized temperature adjustments for different times of the day.

Some homeowners may also qualify for additional retrofits such as insulation and weatherproofing, which can boost the energy efficiency of their homes and improve the overall performance of their HVAC systems.

The specific eligible improvements vary by program and home type, so it’s essential to consult with a certified energy advisor to determine which energy-efficient upgrades will qualify for funding.

5. How Do I Apply for These Home Efficiency Rebates?

Generally, you will need to complete a home energy audit, obtain a quote for the recommended improvements, and submit the required documentation to the respective organization. An expert home energy advisor can guide you through the application process and help you maximize the available rebates.
